What to Wear for maternity & newborn Photo Shoot- clothing ideas

One of the very most important things about your session is the clothing that you wear. It sets the style and tone of the session. There are no rules but here are some suggestions and a few things that fit my style for you to consider …..

Keep it simple, timeless and classic!

I suggest neutral color tones! They look amazing in the studio and outdoors. I want the first thing you notice in your images is the love and connection; not the clothes you have on. Your clothing should reflect the simple beauty of the moment we are trying to capture. Mom’s are always welcome to use my studio clothing collection for maternity sessions and for parent photos with their newborns.

I even offer a few items for Dad’s to wear. Dad’s look great in a fitted white or gray casual t-shirt or a Henley and pants/nice jeans, etc. Or if you are willing we can do skin on skin….. which is BEAUTIFUL!! Just remember, don’t try to match perfectly (and forget about everyone in white t-shirts with khaki pants!) Instead of color-coordinating, concentrate on choosing tones and textures that compliment each other and keep the focus on your family and little ones.

Newborn Photoshoot

Clothing is not something I recommend for your newborn’s portrait debut. The baby’s birthday suit is best because we’re trying to capture little toes, cute bums and all the fuzzy squishy folds that your baby is going to grow out of in just a few weeks. I love to use soft colors of white, creams and muted neutrals. On occasion, I will add in small pops of color, but I don’t like anything to distract from the baby. I try to keep things simple and pure and rarely use many props besides, hats, headbands, blankets, and wraps. I prefer to keep the focus on the baby.

Maternity Photoshoot

This is one of the times you want to show off your beautiful belly, so don’t be afraid of a tighter fitting outfit or sheer flowing top with leggings or a maxi dress. I have a beautiful collection of maternity gowns in my newborn studio wardrobe to chose from if you would like to stop by and try them on!
